Not Like Mike

By Neil Munro, National Journal Magazine - June 21, 2008

Barack Obama is hinting he will visit Iraq after a two-year absence. Some Democrats fear another fish-out-of-water fiasco similar to Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis's decision during his 1988 presidential campaign to ride in a tank while wearing an oversized helmet and a goofy grin. If Obama goes, he should arrive wearing a familiar blue power suit, then don custom-fitted body armor but avoid camouflage clothing, said Sandy Dumont, a Democratic-affiliated image consultant. "Anything but those Army grunge-green colors; they make everybody look tired, weary, sad, and washed out," she advised. But even unremarkable pictures of Obama in Iraq would only serve to showcase John McCain's war stories, said Brian Kirwin, from GOP-affiliated Rourk Public Relations. Also, if Obama tours only safe areas, he will undermine his claim that Iraq is a quagmire, Kirwin said. "The potential blowback of looking silly is more damaging than not being there in two years." --Neil Munro
